 Miguel Cotto: Free Agent
« Thread Started on Mar 25, 2009, 3:18pm »

From Boxingscene.com:

WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto is still sitting back while Top Rank finalizes his next fight, unification with IBF champ Joshua Clottey on June 13 at New York's Madison Square Garden. He plans to return to training camp on either April 6 or April 7. He recently came back from a vacation with his family and plans to meet with Top Rank to tie up some loose ends on the Clottey deal.

One of the bigger issue in the background is Cotto's promotional contract with Top Rank, which expires at the end of the year. Since the license revocation of Antonio Margarito on February 10, there seemed to be tension between Cotto and Top Rank. The Puerto Rico star was upset with Top Rank's support of Margarito, who lost his license for one-year due to a foreign substance that was found in his handwraps before the Jan. 24 bout with Shane Mosley. Cotto became more upset when Top Rank announced plans to maneuver around the license issue by staging a Margarito fight in Mexico. Cotto felt that Margarito should have been banned everywhere.

When Cotto's contract expires, he plans to explore all of the options available to him, but he doesn't rule out the possibility of promoting himself. Cotto already runs Miguel Cotto Promotions in Puerto Rico and may represent himself under that very banner.

"It's something we have talked about as a team. We have not made a decision, but we will explore all of the possible options and then determine what is best for us," Cotto told Primera Hora.

Mark my words...If Cotto leaves Top Rank and everything goes according to plan, we'll see Mayweather/Cotto in the first half of 2010...

P.S. Boxingscene Fact Checker- Cotto is WBO Champion, not WBA Champ...

Cotto needs to leave Top Rank! Bob Arum only cares about filling his pockets at his fighters expense. I hope he leaves but not Promote him self. He says he doesn't choose his fighters he lets his team and Management do that for him. Ok , now if he promotes himself then he would have to choose his fights. I wish he would go to Golden Boy for at least a year or two Contract. We would get Mosley vs Cotto 2 in Vegas . So there will be no excuses after Cotto takes him again. Then we can finally get Mayweather vs Cotto. Maybe even a Cotto vs Hatton. Miguel Cotto is at a point of his career that he should just be fighting the best fighters out there, If he wants to cement his Legacy.

1st Stop June 13 Welter Weight Unification Bout
Joshua Clottey vs Miguel Cotto

2nd Stop A Fall Fight with Shane Mosley for all the Marbles.
Unification Bout WBO,IBF,WBA and Ring Title Belt .
This is a no brainer fight to make if Cotto gets past Clottey in June.

3rd MegaFight with PacMan who is P4P .

4th Get a Fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

And for my last Fight in San Juan PR. Have a Redemtion fight with Margarito and TKO his cheating ass and avenge my only Loss!

Not too sure if self promoting would work. Golden Boy has a lot of muscle so thats a very good option. A 2nd fight with Mosley for sure and maybe Hatton and by some miracle floyd

I love seeing Cotto fight, so Mosley, PBF, whoever, i don't care. However, i do think Bori's idea is great. Karma for you sir.

DLH, Floyd and now Cotto. They all have grown out of Arum's Top Rank and have the ability to go on their own. The diference with Cotto is hes a diferent kind of boxer than the previous 2, DLH and Floyd had the perfect fighter/bussinesman combo and while Cotto has been testing the waters with his promotional company his lacking on the charisma department might be a disadvantage. I agree with Bori, things would change a lot if he had to do all the talking and calling out for fights im not sure how that would come out.
GBP would be a nice option but DLH i dont think he would trust DLH, Mosley and BHop that much ;)
Hes been talking to Dibella for some co promotional stuff so who knows what that might lead him to.

You know Cotto has to be thinking that if he were with Golden Boy and had the services of Nazim Richardson at his disposal that maybe he would've beat Margarito...It has to be a thought that comes to mind, especially as Arum so passionately defends Margarito...

Cotto is very good at following instructions. Hes like a programed robot when he comes out of the corner. If it was Richardson doing the programing Cotto would be like the latest Terminator model.

If Cotto were with GBP we would have Cotto-Mosley 2 instead of Clottey. But I agree that Arum is acting like a jerk getting behind a suspended cheater instead of the second most popular fighter on his roster.

Arum has no interest in the fighter, his biggest concern is with the banker, with this division where it is at today(The best in boxing), Cotto needs to leave top rank, to many good fight out there with a lot of $ to be made, it seems to me self promotion is a very good option, you can make the best fight for you as well as what us fans want to see. these will sell themselves no need for top rank.

I would like to see Mosley Cotto 2 soon before Shane gets any older, then a Pacman fight would be nice.
