Pacquiao okays Cotto as next foe

Monday, June 15

MANILA, Philippines -- Impressed by the tremendous amount of fan support Miguel Cotto generated in his welterweight fight yesterday, Manny Pacquiao has given promoter Bob Arum the go signal to arrange a fight between the two stars.

Speaking to Michael Marley of The Examiner, Arum -- who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto -- said he already has penciled November 14 as the targeted date for the Pacquiao-Cotto showdown.

Pacquiao sat ringside with Arum as Cotto carved out a hard-fought split decision win over the tough Joshua Clottey to retain his WBO welterweight strap yesterday at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Puerto Rican fought on despite sustaining a deep gash in the left eyebrow.

"Manny told me what to do. Manny told me 'Go ahead, make that fight.' So it will go Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand here in (Las) Vegas," Arum told Marley. "He (Pacquiao) was impressed by Cotto's fan support and told me it reminded him of how the British fans stand with Ricky Hatton."

A proposed Pacquiao-Cotto bout became more likely after Floyd Mayweather -- one of Pacquiao's targeted opponents -- announced he is calling off his comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez because of a rib injury he sustained while training.

Mayweather is originally slated to face Marquez on July 18. With the injury, however, their fight is reportedly being rescheduled to September 19 -- making a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout unlikely to happen within the year.

Arum, meanwhile, assured that Cotto is enthusiastic with the prospect of a Pacquiao bout.

"Miguel is delighted to get a fight against Manny, trust me. Miguel very much wants this fight. It will be a sensational fight (with) the way they attack," Arum said. - courtesy of Philstar News Service.

Unfortunately, unless Manny plans to stay and defend at 147 should he win, this fight means absolutely nothing...An entertaining hour at the expense of an entire division...

I agree with Paul.

This fight should occur at 147. Anything less is not fair to Cotto and completely skews the scales in Pac’s favor. Boxing history reveals that boxers who come down in weight are far more negatively affected than boxers who move up in weight.

All one has to do is look at Cotto’s struggles at 140 to realize that he would be ill served to fight below 147.

I would even go so far as to say that Cotto should walk away from this fight if it is not made at the welterweight limit.

This is exactly what Cotto needs to catapult himself into a floyd bout. lets hope floyd eases his ridiculous demands cos arum wont have any of it. And Pac will never fight Cotto at 147 it has to be an unhealthy weight for cotto cos thats his best chance.
If Cotto wins then shane mosley seems more and more like a viable option for floyd. It really mixes things up nicely

at 147 cotto will be too big for pacman which is not a natural welterweight, either way there is a disdvantages to both.. however the fighter still have the final decision. whatever it is... i know i will still enjoy see them on the ring whoever their opponent is...

So if this fight will be agreed at 144 or 145 lbs, will cotto's belt be at stake? can the winner between the two be rightfully called a welter champ? Can anyone clears my mind, argh!!!! i'm confused................

Anything over 140 lbs. and under 147 lbs is Welterweight- A fact that makes Pacquiao's weight demands an absolute mind-fuck...

Cotto said he will not go down in weight! So if Manny wants this fight he needs to come to 147. And at 147 Cotto is a beast. Clottey , Mosley , Margarito are all big strong Welter Weights with power and granite chins. Pac-man never been hit by someone who hits as hard as Cotto. Miguel Cotto is also a very good boxer as we seen in the Judah and Mosley fights. And Manny is not a big enough to back Cotto up like Clottey and Margarito. Cotto will be boxing and moving forward. Manny is quick and moves a lot. But he can't run for 12 rounds and expect to take Cotto's belt. Nor is he a skillful boxer with talent like Mayweather. Once Pacman goes in to trade with Cotto it will be a short night.

Personally Cotto gains nothing by beating Pacman. He gains a good payday and exposure and a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. But when he does destroy PacMan. It will be the end of Pacman. Personally he should fight a 135lb fighter and sit and wait for a mega payday with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But he thinks by watching Clottey fight Cotto that he will have some success . Big difference. Clottey has some excellent defense. Manny doesn't have the defense that Clottey has. Maybe he think they can re- open that gash. Or he smoking the same sh*t NeoMack is smoking he becoming delusional .

Cotto by Brutal KO!!!

But Im glad That Cotto will get a shot at a Mega Boxing Event and the casual fans who don't know much will soon know who he is. And he will get the respect he deserves. Then with that win. We should be able to finally get Miguel Cotto vs Floyd Mayweather.

Because there can not be any more excuse for Floyd Mayweather Jr to not fight Cotto after he beats PacMan. Cotto will be the biggest name and the man to beat.

Poor Mosley sitting out for a big pay day that he will never get.

I want to see Cotto vs Mosley 2 or Cotto vs Mayweather after PacMan.
Things are heating up and getting good.

Even though it's a much tougher fight but I hope Manny decides to let Cotto fight at 147.Manny can come in at 142 or 144lbs if he wants.147 and it's a much bigger win(IF he wins).Anything else and it's just a good win.

Is there any question now that Manny Pacquiao most definitely is NOT deserving of the 140 lb. lineal title?

The facts and The BTBC World Rankings reflect that...Where is everyone else in the "boxing world" to co-sign?

Let's hope Cotto's eye heals in time. He has been suspended from boxing for 3 months for his cut to heal before starting any training or fight.

And I hope it's at 147! And that Cotto trains his ass off.

I don't think he is a fast as he was against Judah & Mosley.
I thought his speed was not there in the Clottey fight . He looked slower to me for some reason. He needs to work on that.

By your reasoning, Mayweather is and always will be lineal welter champ...until he's defeated..

Lineage is important, but resume is more of a factor in determing the top spot in a division...Not only will Pacquiao not fight any of the top 140 pounders anytime soon, he won't even be fighting at 140...One victory alone, albeit over the #1 guy, shouldn't make you king...
